ACTIVE-AURORA project launched at the University of Alberta - Canada’s first Connected Vehicle (CV) test bed network - Lead by Dr. Tony Qiu.
The official announcement for the establishment of the ACTIVE-AURORA Test Bed Network brings together key researchers and partners of the project to share information about this exciting milestone in Canadian transportation innovation with the public. This initiative is a unique partnership among the University of Alberta (U of A), University of British Columbia (UBC), three levels of government (Transport Canada, Alberta Transportation, and the City of Edmonton), and industry. The test beds will be built and operated in Edmonton (ACTIVE) and Vancouver (AURORA), with the U of A’s Centre for Smart Transportation (CST) leading research on the Edmonton component, which will include two on-road test beds and the ACTIVE Lab transportation and traffic data management centre.
The ACTIVE-AURORA Test Bed Network helps Canada meet that challenge by providing a platform for investigating and implementing innovative Connected Vehicle (CV) technologies. One of the latest and most exciting developments within ITS, CV technology enables vehicles to communicate critical, real-time information—location, speed, inclement weather, adverse road conditions and more—with other vehicles and surrounding infrastructure via wired and wireless networks.
ACTIVE-AURORA will provide real-world test zones, combined with laboratory settings, where conditions can be customized to simulate various situations. These facilities offer state-of-the art learning opportunities, which will strengthen Canada’s research advantage by attracting world-class researchers to test and evaluate new connected vehicle technology, as well as coaching the next generation of transportation experts.
